luxury Benzes for the presidential fleet

The Govt. and Ministers are only thinking of importing Benz cars, increasing fuel allowances, and International travel with a retinue larger than is necessary, said the Co- Chairman of the Patriotic National Movement ( PNM), Dr. Bandara, urging the Govt. to abandon luxury living and tours, and consider making sacrifices which is nil from their side, right now.

The government’s refusal to grant an agreed judicial salary hike and the decisions to slash the fertiliser subsidy and allow the cost of fuel and essential items to shoot up beyond control will not be taken lightly by the public as long as the government continues to spend billions of rupees on its own decadence, such as buying eight brand spanking new super-luxury Benzes for the presidential fleet.

After having blown Rs. 3 billion on Mihin Lanka, the government is not only planning to continue the airline, but to invest at least another Rs 1 billion into the money sucker before profitability even comes to the horizon let alone the fore.

A retired military officer explained the government’s lack of any direction in military and somewhat sympathetic terms: "with so many ministers, the cabinet is like four or five platoons in military terms. It is a company effectively. That makes the company commander, the President, effectively a major in his current scenario and his brothers are deputies or company captains. Each platoon is also from a different political party, which is like putting soldiers from many countries to work together for the first time. So no one in the military will be surprised that the government is so impotent in this scenario."
