Kandy Perahera for 17 countries via Live Sat-Cast

17 nationalities around the world will get the opportunity of viewing the Kandy Esala Perahera live telecast this year. The Ministry of Tourism has stepped in to the telecasting of the country’s biggest cultural pageant with the view of providing the opportunity for more viewers across the world to witness this momentous event.

The Ministry also expects a boost in tourist arrival through the implementation of this kind of promotional activities to the world. This is the first time that the Kandy Esala Perahara is telecast outside Sri Lanka.

Intelsat-60, the satellite cast company will under take the process of telecasting the event to 17 countries including Japan, Italy, Australia, Taiwan, Thailand, Myanmar, South Korea, Dubai and India.

The three and half hour long telecast will cost Rs.4 million to the Ministry. Ministry will also look in to the possibility of extending this telecast to countries like the United States and the United Kingdom.

The Ministry also welcomes the sponsorship of private firms to assist in this event which would cost Rs.50-60 million for the organizers in conducting the entire Perahera.

An estimated crowd of 100,000 is expected to be converged to Kandy for Perahara on the opening day which will go up to 200,000 by the final day.

The main income source for Sri Dalada Maligawa is the entrance fee obtained from the Foreigners and the Esala Perahera has largely contributed for Kandy to become a major tourist destination.

Dates of the Kandy Perahera 2007:

From 18th August 2007 (Saturday) to 28th August 2007 (Tuesday)
• 18th July to 22nd August 2007 – Kumbal Perahera
• 23rd to 27th August 2007 – Randoli Perahera
• 27th August 2007 – Maha Perahera
• 28th August 2007 – Day Perahera
