UPFA Props Up Rajapaksa

Earlier in the day, disregarding Sirisena’s total and explicit rejection of Rajapaksa as a candidate for parliament and the Prime Minister’s post, the Central Committee of the United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance (UPFA), of which SLFP is the main component, met at the SLFP headquarters in Colombo and declared that Rajapaksa will lead the election campaign.

The UPFA’s pro-Rajapaksa General Secretary, Susil Premajayantha, produced a letter dated July 3 which said that Rajapaksa will be in charge of the elections.

Rajapaksa also took part in the discussions, unfazed by the frontal attack UPFA chairman Sirisena had made against him only a day earlier.

When the media asked him to comment on Sirisena’s prediction that he will lose the parliamentary elections just as he lost the Presidential race in January this year, Rajapaksa smiled and said: ” Let’s see about it on August 17.”
