  12. Miss Japan is Miss Universe 2007

A raven-haired Miss Japan, Riyo Mori, was crowned Miss Universe 2007 in Mexico on Monday (May 28) in a contest marked by protests, a banned dress and the withdrawal of one beauty queen on the grounds that the pageant degrades women. India’s Puja Gupta made it to the top 10 in the Miss Universe 2007 contest but did not make it to the final five.

Mori, 20, the 56th winner of the title, was given her $250,000 diamond-and-pearl crown by last year’s winner, Zuleyka Rivera of Puerto Rico, watched by a live audience of 10,000 and some 600 million television viewers worldwide.

During the evening gown parade, Miss USA, Rachel Smith, slipped on the runway and landed on her bottom, although the slip didn’t stop her earning fifth place.

The five finalists at Miss Universe Miss Venezuela Ly Jonaitis, Miss Korea Honey Lee, Miss Brazil Natalia Guimaraes, Miss USA Rachael Smith and Miss Japan Riyo Mori

This year’s contest was marked by controversy, with a handful of Mexicans booing Smith in the run-up to the finals because of what they saw as US unfriendliness toward illegal immigrants.

Miss Sweden, Isabel Lestapier Winqvist, unexpectedly pulled out of the event because of complaints in her country that it degrades women.

In another hitch, Miss Mexico was made to change her outfit for the regional dress contest after her original dress, decorated with brutal images of rebels in a 1920s religious uprising being hanged or shot, drew accusations of poor taste.

The finalists’ names were announced early in yesterday’s show. As soon as the final 15 had been selected, they immediately strutted across the stage in animal-print bikinis for the swimsuit competition.

Then the top 10 were announced, including Smith and Gupta. The others were Micaela Reis of Angola; Natalia Guimaraes of Brazil; Riyo Mori of Japan; Honey Lee of Korea; Rosa Maria Ojeda of Mexico; Xiomara Blandino of Nicaragua; Flaviana Matata of Tanzania; Ly Jonaitis of Venezuela.

The winner travels the world for a year on behalf of charities and pageant sponsors.

  13. A chat with Aruni, Miss Sri Lanka 2007

The beautiful Miss. Sri Lanka for Miss. Universe 2007, Aruni Rajapaksa is both intelligent and pretty. Lat weekend Aruni bagged several mini titles before walking away with the crown.

“As you may have seen, my happiness and emotion took the better of me as I started to cry with happiness. Though I was a bit scared I was ecstatic about the fact that I won. When Maria was crowned 1st runner up I knew that I had won the pageant for Jackie (Miss Sri Lanka 2006) came and crowned me from behind…”

“Although I live in Colombo, my home town is Kandy and I schooled at Swarnamali Maha Vidyala in Kandy. Ever since I was small I was interested in modelling and then later as I grew older, I was keen on taking part in the Miss Sri Lanka contest for Miss Universe.” When asked whether she had prior experience in taking part in beauty pageants, she replied that she had won the Udrata Manike in the year 2004 and Capri Queen in 2005. “Although I wanted to take part sooner in the Miss Sri Lanka pageant I decided to take my time and gain more experience before participating in it.” So how supportive were her parents? “At the start my father wasn’t very supportive because some of his relations didn’t like the idea of me being a model for we are Kandyan , but later on he changed his mind and now he’s very supportive but most of all my mother and sister are the ones that have been right behind me, supporting me.”

Talking more about the pageant she also added, “I also won several mini titles such as Himalaya Miss Talent, Veet Smoothest, Reebonn Miss Beautiful Skin and finally Hilton Miss Personality. For the Miss Talent pageant I performed a Kandiyan dance for a song by Chandra Lekha. Since I had taken dancing lessons when I was at school and this was for the Miss Sri Lanka I thought a dance act would be more suitable” she said .

So what does she hope to do in the future?

“My future plans are to continue with my modelling career which I have been doing for the past two years and also to be successful internationally as well. Of course I am looking forward to going to Mexico to represent my country in the Miss Universe 2007 pageant and I will try to serve Sri Lanka to the best of my ability….” By Sherwani Synon for Daily Mirror
