UNP M.P. Harrison said, the Govt. which has no development programs, economic progress nor answers to people’s dire suffering is trying to solve only its problems, not country’s, by holding manipulated, rigged, tyranny ridden, untimely, uncalled for elections.
It is tying to repeat again in the Sabaragamuwa and North Central provinces, its monumental election violation practices in recent Eastern Province polls, but for which the Govt. could not have ever won, (Opposition has already filed action against the victory in Supreme Court) Already, blatantly and openly, it has started using State property and vehicles for election campaign flouting election laws. Its own Minister Jeevan Kumaranatunge opened an Office in Anuradhapura state land. Govt.’s Officers who are its stooges are being used to threaten residents against voting for the Opposition. Election ‘gundus ’- spurious development plans and programs after neglecting the electorates for so long have been launched: erecting electricity posts, offering bribes even to temple incumbents, let alone residents. Ministerial and Govt. Dept. vehicles using bogus number plates are also being used with the Police turning a blind eye, he bemoaned.
The Govt. ‘s desperation is so immense that it is trying to deliberately place the life of Rtd. Major General Janaka Perera , the UNP Chief Ministerial candidate in peril . It is even ungrateful, and prepared to totally forget Perera’s war successes against LTTE when he was in service. It has still not provided him with the due security despite numerous requests, though it is fully aware that his life is in much greater danger than his UPFA rival who is given an elite security detail of 30 personnel. The Police too has said that his life is at stake being an LTTE target for attack. He also has threats from the TMVP cadres, a breakaway LTTE group, not to mention the threats from tyrannical groups of the pro Govt. goons, he asserted.
Janaka Perera is a precious asset to the country. Hence, it is the duty of all to protect him. And, if any harm befalls him, the Govt. has to be fully answerable, he emphasized
The Govt. is trying to secure election victory using all the foul resources, because it is fully aware that it can never win any election conducted in a fair and free manner
