Two security officers are adequate to clear the path of the VIP
John Silva says… This is no affront to the Courts of Law of Sri Lanka. It is only an observation by a senior citizen, who is also an income tax payer who joins others in footing the bill in waste and extravagance.
The late Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar was killed despite the security provided to
him and so were many others. The late President John F. Kennedy was killed whilst travelling in a motorcade. The assassin is not a lone wolf. He is backed by an army of conspirators.
Two security officers are adequate to clear the path of the VIP. Security men on motor cycles and back up vehicles only add to the pomposity and self importance of the one who believes he is a big shot and the cynosure of all eyes. Recently two officers who were providing security to an MP fired at an assassin and arrested him with injuries caused by gun shots, proving that two guards are sufficient.
This country can ill-afford to pamper those preening self-opinionated politicians who thirst for prominence. Politicians are highly enamoured of fuss and pageantry. With the LTTE on the rampage, the Security Forces are assigned to watch the streets and also fight the insurgents, with little rest and sleep.
Can’t those who fancy themselves as VIPs travel incognito and spare the citizenry? Those politicians who make ill-gotten money by somersaulting and high jumping feel safe only when backed up by a plethora of guards. via eMail
