President finally seeking UNP’s 13th amendment

The Rajapakse Govt. is no longer the Govt., people voted into power. It is a hotchpotch with no policies. For political opportunism, it had taken in all corrupt politicians seeking refuge under it, only, in order to maintain its majority on headcount. The Mahinda Chintana is now moth eaten with not a single of its promises fulfilled.

Lakshman Kiriella., UNP Parliamentarian addressing a Media briefing at the UNP Media Unit today (24 Jan) reiterated that it is only the UNP which could make pragmatic solutions, right along to the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka. The 13th amendment, the District Council Bills and the Provincial Council Bills were all UNP’s measures to solve the ethnic problem. Neither the JVP nor the SLFP had ever brought forth any such solutions. Rather, they have only sabotaged the attempts of the UNP.

When the Indian Peace keeping Force (IPKF) came into Sri lanka in1987, and the 13th amendment was introduced, the SLFP and the JVP staged massive protests against them They created a hue and cry rousing the people telling all the lies under the Bo-tree at Pettah. But, now, see the state of this country, torn into shreds with no peace, no food and no security, he exclaimed.

If the IPKF has continued in Sri Lanka for a further month, even Prabakaran would have been captured .And, mind you this was all done at Indian Govt. expense without the war becoming a burden on Sri Lanka’s finances. He added.

President made a solemn promise in the Chintana that within three months of his coming into power he will solve the ethnic conflict by an all party consensus. Has he ever done that, he asked. Even the All party representatives Committee (APRC), after holding 72 sessions with President’s permission had been reduced to nought by the same President, who now casts away the 11000 page document and tries to foist the13th amendment into it in a last minute effort. In other words, he has now found that it is the UNP’s 13th amendment introduced many years ago is the only and best answer to the ethnic conflict after so much devastation has been wrought on the country! He concluded.
