The Marians Concert Singapore 2007

marians

The Marians, one of Sri Lanka’s Top Pop groups – swayed the thousand over crowd at the Singapore civil service club concert on Sunday afternoon (30/9/07).

The group arrived in Singapore at about 6am, on the day of performance, immediately after finishing a dinner / dance function in KL (Malaysia).

When I first set eyes on the group members during the sound check just before the concert at 3.30pm, all of them looked exhausted, heavy-eyed and dejected. To make matters worse the sound system was faulty during the first two numbers when they took to the stage, the perfectionist singer decided to stop in the midst of the second song for a sound engineer to rectify the system, which was done in a jiffy.

Boom and Bang! It was a Magical Mystery Concert from hereon for the Marians and the audiences – these guys were suddenly transformed and Energized – the connection between the band and audiences were established for the next three hours plus with only a 10 minutes interval.

Fortunately, the Marians were not required to stop between every few songs for promotional announcements, which were common among other Sri Lankan groups in the past. This led to an exceptional performance, and the bonding and rapport with the crowd was excellent.

The band had so much fun on stage that it was really very contagious and the excitement spilled over to the crowd. The boy’s sense of humour punctured with brief explanation of the songs was done very meaningfully and eloquently.

Also, they showcased their versatility as world-class performers by the spectrum of songs ranging from Sinhala / Tamil / Hindi / English / American / Latin all done to flawlessness. In addition, they were very obliging and did all their well-known hits and the requested songs.

Beside been extraordinarily talented musicians these guys are culturally very refined. During the show they were very polite, courteous, respectful and refine.

Before the closure of the show and the singing of the National anthem, the singer appealed for all to stand and those with headgear’s to remove them as a show of respect. Yet, one bloke refused to remove his head cap but after several emotional appeals by the lead singer, he relented and removed his headgear. Their recital of the national anthem was done with so much feeling that it managed to move me a non Sri Lankan.

From the performance it’s obvious that The Marians are not simply musicians but they excelled as perfect ambassadors to the Motherland – Sri Lanka.

If there is a “Marians” concert, waste no time, get your tickets bring your love ones and entertainment will be guaranteed. Their radiation of positive Energies and showmanship will leave one impressed for many years for sure.

The Marians musical journey is just beginning!
