Britain has extended its fullest support to Sri Lanka

“Britain has extended its fullest support to Sri Lanka in finding a sustainable solution to the crises in the North and East,” stated the British Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs- Dr. Kim Howells.

Dr. Howells made this remark yesterday during his discussion with the President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees.

During the discussion, Dr Howells discussed the latest issues with regard to the situation in the country with the President Rajapaksa. He stated that the terror actions of the LTTE can not be approved under any condition.

Dr. Howells also delivered a special letter sent by the British Prime Minister Toni Blair to the President Rajapaksa.

President Rajapaksa handed a report on the conduction of the Government and the actions taken by it regarding the alleged disappearance to the British envoy.

The discussion was also attended by the Minister of Foreign Affaires Rohitha Bogollagama, Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affaires- Dr. Palitha Kohona, British High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Dominick Chilcott British Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Kim Howells came to Sri Lanka yesterday.

Government representatives, opposition leaders and civil society representatives will also hold discussions with the visiting Minister with regard to the Sri Lanka’s current situations.

Previously in February this year Dr Howells made a visit to Sri Lanka. He met President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and visited conflict and tsunami affected Ampara district to see the impact of the conflict on local communities.

This is the third visit of the Minister to the island nation with his visit to Sri Lanka in October 2000 as UK Minister for Trade and Industry.
