While a whole bunch of Neros are playing their fiddles with Sri Lanka burning for want of statesmen and leaders with courage and vision very much like what happened to Rome, Thamilselvan’s young ladies are being readied to carry out some deadly missions.
The Government of Sri Lanka are unable to do anything about the ethnic crisis; they simply have no idea how to get about it despite the fact there is in existence the 1987 Gandhi-Jayawardene Peace Accord, an ideal arrangement agreed upon after a series of intensive soul-searching by both parties to it.
Despite a series of conferences chaired by President Mahinda Rajapakse in which the various parties participated with the exception of the TNA Conference of Clowns symbolized by the canine in His Master’s Voice, the government has not made any headway in reaching a consensus. If this is not pathetic, what else is?
The LTTE do not want a solution to the ethnic crisis and they are not the spokespersons for the Tamils by all considerations that confer representative status on any individual or group. It is inconceivable that the government and its Norwegian friends – friends of a rare kind of highly questionable integrity – recognize only the Bullet Battalion as the ones with whom some kind of political arrangement should be determined.
This seems to satisfy the government’s strategy of prevarication, a cheat and sham performance to overcome its inability to take up a statesman’s role with courage and determination. Either President Rajapakse lacks the vision of a true leader or he is unable to wrench off communal elements among the Sinhalese, a terrible curse of racial and religious bigotry well ingrained in the minds of the southern racists and where the Buddhist faith prevails. If this is the realism that has the country in its grip, one can conclude that the southern racists do not understand what multicultural statehood means, but even worse, the precepts of the Buddhist faith.
On the other hand, the force that helps the government to avoid bringing about a solution to the ethnic crisis is the deadly terror outfit from the Wanni lair, the LTTE. Their goal is a mafia state for the LTTE to rule, ravish and revel with the aid of guns and grenades.
The rights of the Tamils are but a cover to root themselves firmly in South Asia in the style of the Sicilian mafia in the Mediterranean. In this they are aided by an arrogant minority of the Tamil Diaspora who have been able to garrotte and stifle the silent majority with the power of the media they control among Tamils living overseas supported by threats and intimidation by Tiger agents. Little do they realize that in the process of supporting the terrorists, they are also helping to breed home grown terrorists in their midst as well.
Here again, the failure of the Government of Sri Lanka to resolve the ethnic crisis is a valuable ground of strength for the arrogant minority of the Tamil Diaspora to exploit. Further, in the current circumstances of continuous violence, a number of them utterly brutal and ruthless, LTTE media agencies and their friends overseas are able to cover much mileage than the government.
This is not helped either by a motley band of foreign journalists having all-paid holidays and adventure in Sri Lanka by writing whatever stuff of mostly sensational type for overseas consumption. They are hardly sensitive to the human aspects of the problems that are rending the country apart.
Amidst all these, the deadly ping-pong of the communal conflict continues in words exchanged between government and LTTE persons as well as all the violence that have now become a tit-for-tat bloody spectacle in various parts of the country.
A recent report believed exclusively given to the Associated Press stated that Su Pa Thamilselvan, who graduated from apprenticing as a pistol gang killer from his adolescent years to becoming the political commissar of the LTTE, as claiming that the increasing violence in areas under government control in the north and east are being carried out by the Sri Lankan military and other groups opposed to the Tigers.
This is a very interesting position to take, if not absolutely incredible perhaps absurd, in the light of his many references in recent times to the Peoples’ Force, the Makkal Padai presumed pro-LTTE. In reality the Makkal Padai is an LTTE cover-up giving a civilian face aimed at creating a false picture. Civilians were forced to take part in drills virtually at gunpoint with even the old and the frail not exempted but the actual attacks were carried out by LTTE personnel from Wanni who had infiltrated into the community.
Thamilselvan is a modern day ruthless political killer and has been the cause of many foul-ups in whatever attempts made to arrive at some kind of a negotiated arrangement, whatever that means. He has condemned the Ceasefire Agreement as a “dead-letter” but his intellectual limitations are such, one wonders whether he has understood what was aimed at with this agreement. He even thought that with this agreement, Wanni was granted a separate sovereign state status. Even now, he certainly believes that Wanni is the State of Eelam and very soon, he probably will go to the UN as its representative.
While he rackets off at one end, the chief government spokesperson, Keheliya Rambukwella goes into the oft-repeated boring chorus that they are willing to resume peace talks and go into the issues so that a permanent solution can be found. This was reported by the Associated Press. Thamilselvan counters this by stating that the escalating violence was the fault of the government, pro-government political parties and the Tiger faction that has broken away from the main group. Then he goes on to repeat what he has been uttering in recent weeks that a full-scale war would be bloody and the LTTE will use all their resources to defend themselves.
Among these resources, he has hinted time and again, the LTTE has a crack force that can cause massive damage in various parts of Sri Lanka. This crack force consists of suicide bombers, young ladies trained from their pre-puberty years to be killers and in carrying out orders, they kill themselves as well. Most of these young ladies were either drawn into this through a series of brainwashing techniques and also by physically and emotionally abusing all that are precious to womanhood. Thamilselvan considers this group of young ladies as the ace battle might under his sleeves that he can release at any time to create a reign a terror in the country.
The count of suicide bombers is now approaching three hundred and they also accounted for the deaths of Neelan Thiruchelvam, President Ranasinghe Premadasa, Ministers Athulath Mudali and Gamini Dissanayake and one time India’s prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi. President Chandrika Kumaranatunge narrowly escaped from being assassinated also by one of these young ladies and so was Minister Douglas Devananda. Thamilselvan firmly believes that this deadly group will be the winner for the LTTE in its goal to create a mafia state.
Trapped in the Wanni terror are also hundreds of children trained, armed and ready for frontline action. These are precious young people the community cannot lose if there is going to be a future for the Tamils in Sri Lanka. One has to presume, that the government too must be of the idea that if this conflict is let to go on without resolution, the problem will disappear when the last Tamil is killed, killed not by the forces but by the Tigers.
The LTTE has foreseen this because already employed in Wanni are many Sinhalese as crafts and handymen, houseboys and gardeners and some Sinhala entrepreneurs have been helped to establish themselves in this bandit territory. By now it has become evident the LTTE are working in close liaison with Colombo’s underworld elements as well as with contact persons who are Sinhalese along the coast from Kalpitiya to Jaela. As someone commented this is the LTTE concept of employing foreign workers short as they are for such in Wanni and that is another reason why there are hundreds of children and young people in their fighting cadres including suicide bombers.
In other words, under the cover of fighting for the liberation of the Tamils from Sinhala dominance that has denied them the rights to be equal citizens in the country, the mafia tentacles of the LTTE have already crept into some parts of the south and more firmly in the capital aided no doubt by the kind of corruption that prevails as a horrible cancer among the bureaucrats and government officials.
This could be summed up as something akin to Nero playing the fiddle while Rome was burning but in this case, far too many people are playing the fiddle while Thamilselvan’s young ladies are ready to carry out some deadly missions. – Satchi Sithananthan (Subidcham)
